Choosing a blog platform

There are 4 different blog companies that I've seen recommended: Typepad.com, MoveableType (owned by Typepad), WordPress.com, and Blogger.com. Of the 4, I've found Blogger.com to be the best option because

1. it's free (Typepad and MoveableType cost $. WordPress is free but technially difficult to use)

2. it's easy - no software installation is required (WordPress and MoveableType have to be installed into your web host account)

3. it's the most user-friendly (Typepad doesn't allow you to publish your blog pages directly to your web site, so your blog gets a link like "yourblogname.typepad.com". With Blogger.com, you can publish your blog pages directly to your own web site, so the pages will be under YOUR domain name: www.yourdomainname.com/blog. Also, Typepad doesn't allow you to customize your blog page template unless you buy one of their high-priced service packages).

Typepad, MoveableType and WordPress have some better features than Blogger.com, but I think it's better to learn about blogging on a free and simple system; if you really get into blogging and decide you can't live without the enhanced features, you can always switch. Keep in mind - Blogger.com is constantly improving it's software, so new features are being added all the time (Blogger.com is owned by Google, by the way).

Hi Vivian... I've done a bit of searching on the blogger.com site to try to find out if it's PayPal-compatible, but I can't find this information. Do you know if this is the case? Thanks.

Hi - I'm sorry for the delay in response. Obviously I've been too slow to update my blog lately!

I'm going to guess that your actual question is: "Can I put a PayPal button into my blog post?" (If I misunderstand the question, let me know.)

The answer would be yes, but it's not something that's built-in on blogger.com (as far as I've seen).

When you generate a PayPal button, PayPal will give you all the code you need to cut-and-paste into your web page. So all you have to do is cut-and-paste this code into the "HTML" view as you are editing your blog post. The button should show up just the same as it would any other web page.

Please let me know if this answers your question!

I was searching for info on PayPal buttons on Blogger and came across your post. I've been having problems getting the paypal button to display properly in my blog posts. It shows up, and it functions--but it also leaves this huge empty space in my blog posts, after the button is displayed--like there are several blank lines below it. Have you experienced this, and do you know how to fix it? Thanks!

Hi Michael -
The problem is the HTML form tag that wraps the PayPal buttons. There is a lot of top and bottom padding associated with the form tag (all this padding is being generated by the blog, not by PayPal -- I ran a quick test).

To override all this padding, I suggest you modify your blog template -- add a css style definition for the form tag that sets top and bottom padding to whatever values you want -- this should override the blog's default form padding behavior.
