Don Black comes to the world of visual art from an extensive
career in music. For over twenty years he was a conductor of symphony
orchestras and opera. Today, Don is still a professor at Shenandoah
University's highly regarded Shenandoah Conservatory and he continues
to be an active
jazz clarinetist.
Don began to paint in 1986, first in oils. However, he soon become fascinated
by the medium of watercolor. Since then
he has studied painting with nationally- and internationally-recognized
artists.
In 1995, he was elected to "signature" artist membership in
the prestigious Baltimore Watercolor Society.

Always interested in the shape of a painting, Don projects the mood and
light of a subject in a loose style that takes advantage of the inherent
qualities of watercolor and acrylic paints. Dealing with elements of
composition and color while responding to the inspiring - but challenging
- whims of
the medium itself has led to a delightful series of abstract and abstract-impressionistic
paintings.
Inspiration comes from the paint itself, from the work of painting, from
a love of being and painting outdoors, and from regular contact with
talented artist-colleagues.

Currently, much of Don's creative time is devoted to the use of layering
techniques, the use of opaque as well as transparent watercolor, painting
with acrylics on both paper and canvas, and experimenting with collage
materials.
Don and his wife Nancy (and four strong-willed cats) live most of the year
in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. They spend summers
at Lac Pemichangan, Quebec—a decidedly cooler place. Nature's
beauty reigns in both places.
