Travertine wall, Johnston Canyon.

Special algae that live on the face of this rock wall are actively extracting carbon dioxide from the ground water that seeps continuously across the face of the rock wall. The deposits left by these millions of little algae plants will eventually become travertine stone, just like is found in the quarries of Italy and France.
