Near Summit of Mauna Kea:Snow

Mauna Kea means "white mountain", presumably because of the snow. A woman we spoke to in Hilo had suggested to us an alternate source of the name. According to some accounts, before pigs and other grazing animals were introduced, Mauna Kea was blanketed with Silver Swords, which might also be the origin of the name since silver swords shine so brightly in the sun.
